Family relations: Son of the French count Pontus De la Gardie and Sofia Gyllenhielm, a natural daughter of king Johann III of Sweden. Married in 1618 Ebba Brahe, a Swedish court lady and mistress of the Swedish crown prince, later King Gustaaf II Adolf, a relationship that endured in secret until the king's death in 1632. Brahe and de la Gardie had fourteen children, six of whom reached adulthood: Magnus Gabriel De la Gardie (1622-1686), Reiches chancellor of Sweden, Maria Sofia De la Gardie (Jakobsdotter) (1627-1694), Jakob Kasimir De la Gardie (1629-1658), Pontus Fredrik De la Gardie (1630-1692), Christina Catharine de la Gardie (1632-1704) and Axel Julius De la Gardie (1637-1710), field marshal and governor general of Swedish Estonia.
