Apprentice with Hans Ghysels, as first master's son (1569); free master by patrimony 1581 (after his father's death, probably to take over the workshop) (Schlugleit 1936); 1581-1582 he settled his father's estate with his brother Salomon (29). On 12 January 1583 his brother Herman (40) and brother-in-law jeweler Jan van Gansepoel testified for Sampson and his wife; in 1582-83 his father-in-law died, after which he had to ettle his estate. In 1583 he rented house 'Bremen' (also called 'De Balance') in Hofstraat, eastside (behind the 'Englse Pand', the property of widow Van Woelput: he stated to be a catholic. On 24 March 1586 goldsmith Balthasar van der Varent in Israelstraat stood warranty for Sampson Wolbaert (last mention in Antwerp) (Van Hemeldonck 2005, Grootwerk 3)
