He accompanied his father to Haarlem, where he had set up a textile factory; from 1839 onwards he led the management for his father. In 1839 he was married to Wilhelmina Christina van Valkenburg, the only daughter of the former mayor of Haarlem; she died in 1844, leaving him with three young children.
