In 1571 Joris appears to have briefly returned to Antwerp, where in November of that year he married Susanna van Onchen. On 3 November 1576 he and his family suffered a severe setback, when they lost all their possessions and their entire fortune in Antwerp and were left with serious debts due to the so-called 'Spanish Fury', when marauding Spanish soldiers sacked the city (Walker 2014).
