Since 1704 engaged in his father's firm Greenwood & Son with its own sugar plantation in Surinam (Black Creek Plantage on the Comawina river). Also engaged as cloth merchant and therefore till 1719 syndic of the Cloth Sellers Guild in Rotterdam. To fight the international financial crisis since 1720 Customs officer and tax collector of the Admiralty, in which capacity he moved 1726 to Dordrecht.
