Besides his political activities he dedicated himself to antiquarian studies and architecture. Member of the Society of Antiquarians , vice-president of the Edinburgh Philosophical Society. In 1722 he inherited the family seat of Pennicuik. He had a decisive influence on Scottish architecture (houses and gardens). He also initiated and published important archeological excavations and studies in Scotland (Saur 1998)
