Studied at the Cooper Union School of Art. The Dutch-American painter Joop Sanders introduced Van Amen to sophisticated artists' cafés, which were frequently visited by Pop Art artists like Robert Rauschenberg, Andy Warhol and Larry Rivers. Van Amen also met with Willem de Kooning at his studio on Long Island.
