Distrusted and suspected of treason by the Dutch in the North and the English, who had joined the militairy resistance after 1585, he retrated to Souburg in Zeeland. He dedicated himself to writing and horticulture in these years. His many writings convinced the new prince Maurice of Orange of his good faith, who again sought his help and sent him on ambassies to London and Paris.
