first mention based on a clear document, 1485: In that year, "Claus von Hagenowe, der kistenmacher" is the owner of a house in Strasbourg's Kurbengasse (today Rue du Maroquin). This house 1553 was still the property of "Margred Mannin, wylandt Niclaus Hagenowers, des bildhouwers, burgers zu Stroßpurg seligen witwe" (Margaret Mannin, the widow of the late N.H. , sculptor and citizen of Strassburg). For a long time they were just a 'Hintersasse' (residents without citizenship): he only reached full citizenship in 1493; in 1495 mentioned as member of the Guild; 1500 till 1519 he represented the guild before the City Council. In 1522 he took over the guardianship of the underage children of the soldier Jost Schönherr. Hagenauer himself is mentioned for the last time in the city archives in 1526, but the exact date of his death remains unknown; the earliest evidence of his wife's widowhood dates from 1538.
